(****)
Think of this as a Leonard Cohen album channeled with grace by his longtime backup singer
and current muse, Anjani Thomas. Instead of Cohen’s sepulchral croak, we are treated to
Anjani’s late-night wisp of smoke murmur. It is a hushed and lovely trade-off. But then, female
singers usually do alright by Cohen - consider Jennifer Warnes and k.d. lang, either of whom
might have given a right arm to have the access Thomas had to Cohen’s notebooks. She’s set
the poet’s words to spare, cabaret-inflected piano settings that let the verses about love,
longing and loss shine like tear stained diamonds.
