"Anjani - Blue Alert"

by David Luhrssen

Milwaukee's The Shepherd Express

June 8, 2006
Sultry jazz singers are not uncommon, but few achieve the intimacy and understatement of Anjani and none of her rivals are fortunate enough to collaborate with Leonard Cohen. Anjani (who lent backing vocals to Cohen’s last three CDs) was allowed to rummage through the files of the man who wrote “Suzanne” and “Bird on a Wire,” often working stray lines and ideas into songs. Cohen also produced Blue Alert, lovingly wrapping Anjani in lonesome saxophones, 2 a.m. pianos and smoky rhythms. The collaboration is seamless on these songs of experience—poetic and melancholy yet hopeful.
