You'll catch them at Madison Square Garden in '73 then on to London's Earl's Court in May 1975. "Led Zeppelin: Live" premieres on Friday, March 7 at 9:00 PM.

On Monday, March 10 at 1:30 PM VH1 Classic will air "Rock and Roll Picture Show: Desperately Seeking Susan" starring Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Madonna and Rosanna Arquette. The film is a delightfully offbeat, original comedy about a bored suburban housewife whose fascination with a kooky character she reads about in the personal ads leads to her being mistaken for the woman herself.

Cohen's first album, "Songs of Leonard Cohen," released in 1967 and reissued last year, included such memorable tracks as "So Long, Marianne" and "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye," as well as "Suzanne," which became a hit for singer Judy Collins.

Next stop for Cohen: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The Ottawa Citizen - September 29, 2007 by Heather Adler

Legendary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen is among nine acts that have been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Joining the Montreal-born poet are Madonna, hip-hop pioneers the Beastie Boys, John Mellencamp, Donna Summer, Jamaican beat originator Afrika Bambaataa, jazz-funk infusionists Chic, the Ventures and Dave Clark Five, it was announced this week.

The nine artists will be pitted against one another, with only five eventually being honoured at the induction ceremony on March 10 in New York. The winners will be chosen by 500 music industry professionals.

Mr. Cohen has already been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. Mr. Cohen was also named a companion of the Order of Canada in 2003.

He is one of the most influential musicians of our day, known as much for his poetic yarns of love, sex, religion and depression as for his striking arrangements. Mr. Cohen, who has suffered from manic depression most of his life, is a first-time nominee.

He was cited by Nirvana's Kurt Cobain in the song Pennyroyal Tea with the phrase, "Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld/ So I can sigh eternally."

That's no surprise, since Mr. Cohen is one of the most interpreted artists in pop music history. His song, Hallelujah, was covered by Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, Patricia O'Callaghan and Bob Dylan.

According to one website, there are more than 720 cover versions of Mr. Cohen's music.

Mr. Cohen was the title character in Looking for Leonard, a movie about the discontented girlfriend of a bank robber whose hollow existence is brightened only by the prose of Leonard Cohen. And he has himself appeared on the small screen: He appeared on Miami Vice as guest character Zolan in 1986.

This is the first eligible year Madonna, the Beasties and Bambaataa could be on the ballot (25 years after an artist's first release), and Ms. Summer and the Ventures are also first-time nominees. Mr. Mellencamp was on the 2004 and 2006 ballots.

Jewish rap superstars the Beastie Boys have enjoyed more than 20 years of mainstream success, dominating the airwaves with such classics as Fight For Your Right, Sabotage and Ch-Check It Out.

Madonna signed with Sire Records in 1982 and has been entertaining -- and sometimes enraging -- people around the world ever since, even being crowned the most successful female artist of all time by the Guinness Book of World Records.

OK, that's a lot of competition. But hey, what's the worry? Everyone loves Leonard Cohen.

2008 ROCK 'N' ROLL HALL OF FAME NOMINEES

ABC News - September 28, 2007
(George Pimentel/WireImage.com)

Leonard Cohen may not be as enigmatic a performer as the other nominees, but the literate songwriter's songs have been featured in countless films. Although Cohen began his music career in the '60s, going on to work with other influential aritists such as Phil Spector in the late '70s, he seeped onto the scene, gaining widespread notoriety when his "Everybody Knows" was used in 1990s' "Pump Up the Volume."

Rock Hall 2008 Nominees Announced: Lamest List Yet

Harp - September 28, 2007 by Fred Mills
(Pictured: Leonard Cohen, by Bob Cato)

So much for Punk, Prog and Psych: with today’s announcement of nominees for the 2008 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame it becomes clear we’ve reached a tipping point from which a permanent downhill slide in quality seems all but inevitable. The nominees are:

Afrika Bambaataa, Beastie Boys, Chic, Leonard Cohen, The Dave Clark Five, Madonna, John Mellencamp, Donna Summer and The Ventures.

True, most of these are deserving musicians even though several could hardly be said to be rock artists. And the old who-they-snubbed-this-year argument has played out each year without fail, so it’s almost pointless to argue; the list is what it is, so to speak.

And fookin’ hooray for someone finally realizing that Leonard Cohen deserves to be enshrined—hell, he deserves a wing at the Hall all to himself.

But we’re just sayin’… is the eventual inclusion of Herman’s Hermits, or Journey, or Silver Convention, or My Chemical Romance now a foregone conclusion? Why not Tiny Tim while we’re at it? Or Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds?!?

Oh, and just seven letters, lest anyone forgets what REAL rock ‘n’ roll sounds like: S-T-O-O-G-E-S, who were famously snubbed last year while children-of-Stooges R.E.M. and Patti Smith (well deserving, don’t get us wrong) were inducted.

From the Rock Hall:

Ballots with these nominees will be sent to over 500 voters who will choose the acts for inclusion into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for this year. Five new inductees will be honored at the annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on March 10, 2008 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. To be eligible for nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. This year's nominees had to release their first single no later than 1982.

See ya March 10, folks.

Cohen among 9 acts nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Leonard Cohen may not be as enigmatic a performer as the other nominees, but the literate songwriter's songs have been featured in countless films. Although Cohen began his music career in the '60s, going on to work with other influential aritists such as Phil Spector in the late '70s, he seeped onto the scene, gaining widespread notoriety when his "Everybody Knows" was used in 1990s' "Pump Up the Volume." The Dave Clark Five, a British pop group of the 1960s known for hits such as Glad All Over.

The Ventures, a Seattle-based 1960s group known for surfer tunes and instrumentals, including Walk Don't Run.

John Mellencamp, an Indiana-born singer-songwriter known for hits such as Hurts So Good.

Donna Summer, the 1970s dance music singer known as the Queen of Disco.

Chic, a 1970s New York electronic and dance music group with hits such as Le Freak.

Afrika Bambaataa, a Bronx DJ who was instrumental in developing early hip hop.

Cohen, a Montreal poet and novelist known for melancholy hits such as Suzanne and Hallelujah, was inducted into Canada's Songwriters of Fame last year.

Madonna burst out of New York dance clubs in the early 1980s with Holiday and became a pop culture icon with her bad girl image and hits such as Like a Virgin.

She has had remarkable longevity as a pop artist and continues to top charts with her latest album Confessions from a Dance Floor.

The Beastie Boys started out as punk rockers and moved into hip hop creating hits such as Fight For Your Right [to Party ].

The hall of fame admitted its first rap pioneers — Grandmaster Flash — earlier this year and more hip hop names are appearing as nominees. Artists must have been around at least 25 years to qualify.

Madonna, Beasties, Mellencamp Up For Rock Hall

Billboard - September 27, 2007 by Jonathan Cohen

Madonna, the Beastie Boys, John Mellencamp and Leonard Cohen lead a wildly disparate class of nominees for 2008 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They join Afrika Bambaataa, Chic, the Ventures, Donna Summer and the Dave Clark Five on the ballot. Five acts will be inducted March 10, 2008, at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

For eligibility, artists had to release their first single no later than 1982. Last year's inductees were R.E.M., Van Halen, Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and the Ronettes.
